ジェームス・ウィークは、オルガン奏者、ピアニスト、現代音楽の作曲者として活動し、「最も独創的な若手作曲家、指揮者の一人」とガーディアン誌他から国際的評価を得ている。1978年イギリスのブラックバーンに生まれ、ケンブリッジ大学で音楽を学んだ後、サウスハンプトン大学で作曲の博士号を得た。その後、ウインチェスター、イートン・カッレジ及びサウスハンプトン大学作曲コース、ロンドン音楽演劇学校の作曲及び声楽学部で後進の指導に当たってきた。2007年11月、ジェームス・ウッドの後任として新ロンドン室内合唱団の芸術監督に指名されるとともに、ロンドンのオーランド室内合唱団の音楽監督及びヨーロッパ各地の音楽祭で客演指揮者として活動している。また、聖歌の推進者、指導者としても期待されている。
Endymion、Uroboros、EXAUDIといったアンサンブル、アントン・ルセコヴィーツ等演奏家から委嘱され、演奏された作品は、BBCラジオ第三局“Hear and Now”で定期的に聞くことが出来る他、音楽情報ウェブ“Sound and Music” (www.soundandmusic.org/node/13480)に紹介されている。
2005年以降、彼の関心は、素朴或いは相当な密度を持つポリフォニー構成で構成されるソロ及び小アンサンブルの作品に向けられている。主な作品としてSchilderkonst (アンサンブルのために、2003～4年)、 Stacking、Weaving、Building、Joining (複数の演奏者のために、2006年), the Harmonies of South London series (多様な演奏者のために、2008年～)、Burnham Air (オーボエのために、2008年)、Hototogisu (少年少女合唱のために、2007年)、TIDE (2007～2010年)、Parnassus (2008年～2009年) and Mala punica (八声のために、2008～2009年)がある。現在、新ロンドン室内合唱団及びロンドンシンフォニー ための作品作りに取り組んでいる。
指揮者としては、2002年にソプラノ歌手ジュリエット・フレーザーと設立したヴォーカルアンサンブルEXAUDI（www.exaudi.org.uk）の指揮で良く知られている。彼はEXAUDIと共に、定期的に各国の優れた現代音楽のソリスト、アンサンブルと共演している。最も複雑な現代音楽の専門アンサンブルの指揮は世界的な評価を得ている。2006年、作曲家クラウディア・モリトールとアンサンブルKürbisを立ち上げ、現代音楽及び実験的室内音楽の演奏に貢献している。
Hailed as ‘one of the most inventive young composers and conductors out there’ by The Guardian, James Weeks enjoys a growing international reputation both for his own music and for his consummate performances of contemporary repertoire.
Born in Blackburn in 1978, he read Music at Cambridge before completing a PhD in Composition at Southampton University, studying with Michael Finnissy. His music has been commissioned and performed by many leading performers including Alison Balsom, EXAUDI, Darragh Morgan and Mary Dullea, Uroboros Ensemble, Endymion, Anton Lukoszevieze and Christopher Redgate. He has been featured at UK and European festivals including City of London, Spitalfields, Vale of Glamorgan and Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festivals, Soundwaves Brighton, Cutting Edge (London), Gaudeamus (Amsterdam), Weimarer Frühjahrstage and Mafra (Portugal). His music is heard regularly on BBC Radio 3’s Hear and Now, and is represented by Sound and Music’s New Voices promotion scheme (www.soundandmusic.org/node/13480).
Since 2005 the main focus of his recent music has been on solo and small-ensemble works exploring elemental or primary musical materials and processes, either left bare or built up into polyphonic structures of considerable density. Recent major works include Schilderkonst (for ensemble, 2003-4) Stacking, Weaving, Building, Joining (for any number of players, 2006), the Harmonies of South London series (for various ensembles, 2008-), Burnham Air (for oboe d’amore, 2008), Hototogisu (for children’s choir, 2007), TIDE (2007-10), Parnassus (2008-9) and Mala punica (for eight solo voices, 2008-9). He is currently writing a substantial work for New London Chamber Choir and the London Sinfonietta for the 2011 Spitalfields Music Summer Festival.
As a conductor, he is best known for his work with the contemporary specialists EXAUDI www.exaudi.org.uk, the vocal ensemble he founded with the soprano Juliet Fraser in 2002. With them he maintains a busy international touring schedule, collaborating regularly with the world’s leading composers, new music soloists and ensembles, and has released five acclaimed CDs, of Finnissy, Fox, Lutyens and Skempton. The ensemble specialises in the most complex new music – performances of Ferneyhough, Dillon, Xenakis, Birtwistle and Finnissy have won them worldwide praise – and experimental music, often presented alongside repertoire from the Renaissance or early baroque.
He was appointed Musical Director of the New London Chamber Choir www.nlcc.org.uk in November 2007 in succession to James Wood, and is also Musical Director of Orlando Chamber Choir (London) www.orlandochoir.org.uk, focusing on Renaissance and baroque vocal repertoire. In great demand as a guest conductor, he has worked with Endymion, IXION, I Fagiolini, BBC Singers, L’Instant Donné (Paris), New Music Players and Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, with whom he recorded Howard Skempton’s Chamber Concerto for NMC. He is also much in demand as a choral animateur and tutor, and has led courses for Lacock and Dartington International Summer School. In July 2008 he spent a week as Artistic Director of Palladium Musicum, Venice, working with young professionals on Venetian Baroque repertoire.
He is also active as an organ recitalist, pianist and writer on contemporary music, and broadcasts regularly on early and new music for BBC Radio 3. In 2006 he co-founded the ensemble Kürbis with the composer Claudia Molitor, dedicated to the performance of contemporary and experimental chamber music. The ensemble has performed in London (The Cutting Edge), Cambridge (Kettle’s Yard), and at Soundwaves Brighton. He has taught composition at Winchester and Eton Colleges and Southampton University, and is now teaches in both Composition and Vocal Departments at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London.
